AGENCY LAUNCHES NOISE AND WELLBEING AT WORK SURVEY FOR THE REMARK GROUP

Leopard Print PR has secured more than 20 pieces of trade press coverage for intelligent business solutions company The Remark Group on the back of a memorable lunch, at which a celebrity chef made an appearance!


Masterchef judge Marcus Wareing popped in to greet attendees at the event, attended by HR, facilities management and smart buildings press, and held at Restaurant Marcus in London’s Mayfair.


The event was held to formally launch the Noise and Wellbeing at Work 2019 survey to an audience of carefully-selected media attendees, with environmental psychologist and workplace wellbeing expert Dr Nigel Oseland in attendance.


The survey revealed that almost half (44%) of office workers say that noisy working conditions have a negative effect on their wellbeing, significantly affecting productivity and stress levels.


Forty per cent of the 1,000 office workers polled admitted noise at work made them feel stressed, while 65% said it affected their ability to complete work in an accurate and timely manner.


  • More than half (52%) said they were interrupted by noise distractions more than five times a day and a further 17% claimed they were distracted more than 10 times a day

  • Sixty-four per cent said they often felt they lacked privacy at work

  • Fifty-one per cent had overhead a confidential or sensitive conversation, while 70% had heard a colleague who felt upset or distressed. This meant more than half would feel uncomfortable speaking about a confidential matter in the office.


Penelope Harrall, marketing lead at The Remark Group, said: “Roughly half of the UK work in open-plan office environments, a system which was initially designed to encourage communication and collaboration between employees. Yet, with this design comes an increase in annoying and distracting workplace sounds, such as telephone ringtones, sudden bursts of laughter and phone conversations.


“These are proven to be distracting and have profound effects on employee stress levels and wellbeing, not to mention the impact they have on loss in productivity.”


Examples of the most distracting noise interruptions identified by the survey included: colleagues’ telephone conversations (74%); personal conversations (65%); sudden laughter (62%); telephone ring tones (58%); doors slamming (56%); and eating noises (55%).


Almost half (46%) resorted to wearing headphones to block out or reduce noise distractions.
